Review
Crime and Poetry is the debut book in Magical Bookshop series penned by Agatha Award-nominated author, Amanda Flower, who is renowned for writing an Amish Mystery series as Isabella Allan. I typically have very ambivalent feelings related to cozy mysteries featuring magic or the supernatural as some have been superbly written and others have been anything but. In Crime and Poetry Amanda Flowers delivers one on the superb end of the scale, truly amazing! Poetry of Emily Dickinson is interspersed throughout the book in the provide hints to solving the mystery. Although not in the book, I believe this one summarizes it nicely. “Write me of hope and love, and hearts that endured.” ― Emily Dickinson. The protagonist, Violet Waverly, hurries home to Cascade Springs, New York, after departing 12 years ago, when Daisy, her grandmother, calls and says she is dying. When Violet arrives she finds Grandma Daisy working and quite well. Grandma Daisy informs Violet that she is to be the new "caretaker" of the bookstore, a Magical bookstore, where the books choose the person. We meet Emerson, a very special tuxedo cat and Faulkner a hilarious crow who loves to talk and learn a large tree is growing through the house and the stream flows with special water. Violet is in for many surprises. When Benedict Raisin, a carriage driver who is also Daisy’s boyfriend, dies mysteriously, Daisy is the prime suspect. Violet must to open her mind letting the books speak to her as she works to solve this mystery before it's too late. Violet also encounters her ex-boyfriend, Nathan, now the Mayor, his brother and a handsome Native American police chief. I’m looking forward to the next book in this enchanting series. I need to know if Violet accepted her calling or returned to Chicago. Two parting quotes from Emily Dickinson that fit perfectly in summarizing this enchanted book. “—Magicians be asleep —But Magic — hath an Element Like Deity — to keep —" and “I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word. Sometimes I write one, and I look at it, until it begins to shine.” ~ Emily Dickinson. This book has a magical, strong story line, outstanding quirky characters, dual romantic interests, a complex mystery, puzzling clues, suspense, and humor. I cannot wait to see what the next book holds. I’d suggest readers pick up a copy of this book so one doesn’t fly off of the shelf and hit you!Full Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own.
