Review
I've been reading a lot of Brenda Jackson lately. I expected this one to follow the same cookie cutter format: -Boy meets girl. He's a player so he wants a fling.-Girl wants something serious and refuses to settle for less but some how her panties fall down all by themselves and she has sex with boy. -Insta-love, marriage within two weeks. This is the formula that I've come to expect with Brenda Jackson novels. Since I come in with low expectations I usually enjoy the books. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book had an actual story line. The characters actually took the time to get to know each other and had developed genuine feelings for each other before they had sex. (Truly shocking). I was equally surprised to find that there were supporting characters and a side story. Not only did we get to read about Bas and Jocelyn, we also followed Reese and Leah. Their story was so interesting and had me on the edge of my seat. First I wanted to know why Leah was staying in town, then I wanted to know what she was hiding. Finally I waited for the moment when she told Reese what happened and their story would unfold. I was all over this book. It got to a point where I couldn't put it down. I was on chapter 14 of 15 when things fell apart. -The Leah and Reese story coming to a conclusion. The issue of rape is something very serious. If it is going to be discussed in a book it shouldn't be just a few chapters or paragraphs. Reese and Leah should've gotten their own book. To have all of this stuff come out including Leah's psychotic break, and then having them get an HEA all within a chapter and a half is just dumb. Leah has her break, she sends Reese away, Reese comes back the next day and then they're eating pancakes together every day. Two days later they kiss. Then Leah decides to stay in Newton Grove, open a restaurant, and she and Reese move into the house that he built. Simply unrealistic for things to happen that fast. They were so entertaining yet the way that the book ended made it all a joke. It's just not right how fast their story got a red shiny bow on it.-Jocelyn's reaction to Bas's declaration of love. We read in earlier chapters how she admitted to herself that she was falling for him. Then when he professed his love she was totally against it. Her reaction was senseless. -When Jocelyn finally admitted to herself how much she loved Bas, she immediately decides to sell the company and move to Charlotte. Now she's spent the whole book talking about how hard she worked at her "Daddy's company". How she worked hard to gain respect in the industry and was more than capable of running things. This has been the theme through out the book. Then within five seconds of Bas's proposal - she sells the company to Cameron Cody - mind you earlier in the book she had no intention of selling at all. Turned Cameron down flat but now she's selling "Daddy's company" that means so much to her in the blink of an eye so that she can move to Charlotte with Bas. Even after he told her that he would move to Newton Grove with her. Unrealistic.-And what is she moving to Charlotte with him to do? Besides getting married I mean. Jocelyn definitely doesn't seem like the type to be a housewife so what exactly will she do in Charlotte? Will she open another construction company? Does the Steele Corporation have a construction division that she can lead? Will she skip the construction and use her business degree in a different way? There are things that we needed to know!! I mean you couldn't have added another chapter or two so that the readers weren't left hanging? This book started off so strong and then with the ending the author ruined what should've been an epic read. I was so prepared to give it a five star rating but that ending just made me angry. My rating is 3.5 stars purely out of frustration.
