Desciption

Bobby's Girl is a story of adolescent turmoil, set in the golden years of Rock 'n Roll. The background is one of blitzed ruins, in London's aftermath of the war. Things are getting better, but the teenagers still feel deprived and resentful. Bernie and Jon meet in school at the age of 10 years, and they become best friends. As they get older, however, they realize that they are in love. They also know that they will receive much opposition from their parents; therefore their love is top secret, until they are old enough to reveal it. They become engaged at the age of 13, then Jon mysteriously disappears. Bernie has several good friends who would seem to be helping her to find Jon...

Review

I love coming of age books and this one is one of the best that I've read. I was gripped right from the very beginning, the love story between Jon and Kate so sweet and tender. My heart ached for them both, especially for Kate, who was trapped in a violent home, with her only protectors the Alley-Cats. Living on the other side of the pond, I truly enjoyed the London setting of the 50's, with all of the vernacular and teen speak of London's east end. I think that while this is a YA book, it would appeal to adults as well like another coming of age book: The Age of Miracles I really thank the author, Bernie Morris, for sending me a copy. She didn't ask me to review it, but I thought that readers should know how splendid and timeless it is.
